Garth Hillside Organic Garden near Llangollen is planning some exciting new courses for the New Year and would like to hear from people who are interested in getting involved. They include composting, herbalism, hedge-laying, coppicing, and wood and straw-bale roundhouse building. They also have regular volunteer sessions on Thursdays.

Coed Cadw are offering subsidised packs of trees which are UK sourced and grown and are designed to support small scale planting on agricultural land, which is not eligible for tree planting grants from the Welsh Government.

The Cultivate group at Cwm Harry, together with the Mid Wales Food and Land Trust, the Town Council and NPTC Newtown Campus, took part in an event in March to develop Newtown’s food identity. Taking inspiration from visiting speaker Pam Warhurst of Incredible Edible Todmorden, as well as an exploration of the values that inform food activities in the town, a sense emerged of a community united by awareness of food, and of the importance of making that more visible to the public.

Cultivate are seeking to raise £120,000 through the issue of shares in order to secure the lease of 8 acres of land at Moelyci, Gwynedd, for 25 years, and to develop it into a market garden. They will also use the money to expand the food hub and nursery at Cultivate Newtown, managing the two sites together.

The SW Wales Permaculture Network had an excellent winter meeting at Dyfed Permaculture Farm Trust on 16 November 2014. Phil Batten and Michelle Lainé, the tenants there, showed us around the site explaining what they do, and why, and answering questions.

For the first time, Permaculture in Wales has its own shop window. You'll notice that we are calling it Paramaethu, which comes from the Welsh words 'parhau' which means continuing, and 'maethu' which means to nurture and is the root of the Welsh words for farming (amaethu) and nursery (meithrinfa.)
